Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell

This week I read part of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. This book is a little boring so far, but where the plot is going is really interesting. The period accuracy of the writing is really cool, as well as the use of footnotes. This book is about the exploits of magician Mr. Norrell, the first magician that England has seen in a very long time. When Mr. Norrell shows a large group of theoretical magicians some practical magic, they all panic and Mr. Norrell becomes a wildly popular party guest. He is very puzzled by this behavior, and moves on to perform much more dramatic and interesting magical acts.

This book is reminiscent of the Bartimeus trilogy, by Jonathan Stroud, and is very interesting. It is a very difficult read, although it has had no adult content so far. The vivid descriptions of the upper class English society are very entertaining. People should read this book if they liked the Bartimeus Trilogy or the Gemma Doyle trilogy.
